Messages that draw the crowd
The seeker-friendly church preaches what the seekers want to hear. They throw in a Scripture or two to give their message a Christian feel before wandering into some secular teachings, philosophies and psychology.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 2 Timothy 4:3-4
The feel good, self improvement gospel
The power of ‘I am’
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20
Do not love the world
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 1 John 2:15-17
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Colossians 3:1-2
Psychology in the Church
Christians are fascinated and captivated by this new religion that has taken the Church by storm.
It is shared from the pulpit, taught as a curriculum in the Sunday School, Christian conferences, cell groups and in church camps.
Many a Christian’s bookshelf is lined with books on this subject and is their guide on every aspect of life. They are more well versed in psychology than in the Word.
Psychology’s profound influence on Christianity cannot be underestimated. It gave birth to Christian philosophy and psychology which fuelled the pursuit of self: self-development, self-fulfillment, self-gratification, self in society, self in the marriage, the family, career and literally every aspect of life. That pursuit took centre stage in the lives of Christians and evolved essentially into a self-centred life.
The origin of psychology
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Colossians 2:8
The Word of God is subtly pushed aside in favour of feel-good philosophy and mind-messing psychology.
The learned cannot wrap their sophisticated minds around the simplicity of the gospel of salvation. It is foolishness to them.
For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness. 1 Corinthians 1:22-23
